#009 Stay Inspired: 7 Ways To Boost Your Creativity
August 20 2018 – Julez Jadon
In this new tutorial series I'm going to show you 7 ways that will help you stay creative. Over the course of one week sit down and start a beat every day using a new way. The 7 challenges will spice things up and make it fun again. Give it a try!
1) Limitation is key
Focus on just one sound source like a synth for example. Try to start an idea by only using that particular synth. Check the different categories and try to make it sound unique by using different effect plug-ins. Bounce it, reverse it, etc.
2) Sample everything
Use a software like Audio Hijack e.g. to sample every dope little piece of music that finds your way - no matter if it's a Youtube playlists or your favorite Netflix series. Create an archive of these samples, mark your favorites and keep collecting.
3) Finding new chords
I often find myself playing the same old chord progressions. A good way to break through is to e.g. use the plug-in Cthulhu by Xfer Records which allows you to play full chords by playing a simple note on the keyboard. You can even change single notes and adjust your chord progression. It's a great way to find new chords within seconds.
4) Sampling/Recycling ideas
New music and dope ideas are everywhere. No matter if you flip an old beat of yours and make it sound better or if you record a dope piece of music right off of Instagram. I think it's a pretty cool way to start a track because you can build around the melody you already hear. Make sure to always mute/delete or clear the sample before you publish your work.
5) Use Splice to get new sounds
Splice's huge pool of loops and ideas is a great way to start a song. Even if you're replaying the idea and deleting the loop later on it is a cool way to get started. Give it a try!
6) Use your own voice
Getting a dope vocal sound is easy these days as technical possibilities are endless - even if you are not the most talented singer. Vocal samples add value and depth to every modest production. No matter how simple your chord progression or lead melody is: Vocals will take it to the next level.
7) Collaborate
Collaborating with other producers will most likely get your productions to the next level. The possibilities are endless in such a striving and fast growing community. Use social media to find other talented producers and combine your crafts. Put your ego aside - a team is always stronger. Every producer has his special skill like e.g. drums, 808's, chords etc. Find your special skill.
